Secure Your Load Awareness Day — June 6

POSTED ON:

6/6/25

Why It Matters for Fleets and Drivers AlikeEvery year, National Secure Your Load Awareness Day (June 6) reminds professional and personal drivers that a few extra minutes spent tightening straps or closing doors can save lives. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, objects that fall or blow out of vehicles kill about 730 people and injure roughly 17,000 more every year, injuries that are completely preventable. But the stakes go beyond tragic headlines. Road debris cleanup costs U.S. taxpayers up to $11.5 billion annually, and studies estimate 20 - 40 percent of that litter comes from unsecured loads. Insurance carriers and plaintiffs’ attorneys increasingly use those numbers to underscore negligence claims when cargo comes loose.

The Compliance Picture

FMCSA Cargo‑Securement Rules (49 CFR §§ 393.100–393.136) set the minimum tiedown strength, working‑load limits, and performance standards every commercial motor vehicle must meet.

Enforcement data show the issue remains on inspectors’ radar. Year‑to‑date 2024 roadside inspections recorded 2,376 violations for “failing to secure cargo as specified.”

Violations can trigger Out‑of‑Service orders, steep civil penalties, and higher CSA BASIC scores, directly affecting insurance premiums and shipper relationships.

Risk Hot‑Spots We See in the Field

  1. “Last‑Mile” Trailers & Flatbeds: Short hauls often tempt crews to skip a final strap or securement check.
  2. Mixed Commodity Loads: Different sizes and centers of gravity create hidden gaps that shift in transit.
  3. Inconsistent Pre‑Trip Inspections: Distracted or fatigued drivers miss frayed tie‑downs and broken latch pins.
  4. Subcontractor & Owner‑Operator Fleets: Variable equipment and training standards complicate oversight.
  5. Seasonal High‑Volume Periods: Speed pressures in agriculture, construction, and retail increase shortcut risk.

CVSA International Road Check 2025 Announced

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced that this year’s CVSA International Road Check will take place May 13–15, 2025. Over the course of 72 hours, law enforcement agencies across North America, including Michigan State Police’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, will conduct thorough roadside inspections on commercial motor vehicles and drivers.During CVSA International Road Check in 2024, there were over 48,000 inspections conducted.
